Master of Advanced Studies(MAS) study course in library and information science

In 2007, this post-graduate course replaced the ‚ Academic Librarian Course BBS ‘ and is offered by the philosophic faculty of the University of Zurich in conjunction with the Zurich Central Library.

The two years practical training at the BiG is conducted in parallel to the MAS study course.


  • Teaching of basic information and documentation activities (collecting, accessing, mediating)
  • Insight into current issues, methods and contents of library and information science
  • Insight into issues pertaining to management board, administration, PR etc.


  • University degree (Master's level), whereby the degree must not have been awarded more than one year before taking up the position
  • Solid command of the German and French or Italian languages as well as English
  • Broad general knowledge, organisational skills, imaginative and logical reasoning power
  • Highly developed communicative and team player skills
  • Independent, outgoing, social competence
  • Interest in information technologies and a good user understanding of IT


The study course begins in the August of every uneven year.
