SLSP und swisscovery – Frequently asked questions on the change

The Library Am Guisanplatz BiG and the Alexandria library network are new to swisscovery. From now on, the holdings of 490 Swiss libraries can be searched on the Alexandria search portal. What does this mean for BiG users? We answer the most important questions.

The Library Am Guisanplatz BiG and the Alexandria Library Network have joined the Swiss Library Service Platform (SLSP). Via swisscovery, users have direct access to the holdings of 490 libraries.

What does this mean for our users? Here we answer some of the key questions you may have:

• Are the holdings of the Alexandria library network also accessible via swisscovery?

  Yes. The Library Am Guisanplatz joined the Swiss Library Service Platform SLSP on 11 April 2022, which means its holdings can now be accessed via swisscovery.

• How does that affect the BiG’s services?

  Information on borrowing and ordering items can be found  here. Please also refer to the the current fees and charges schedule. 

   

• Can I use my existing BiG user details to register on swisscovery?

  No, you have to register anew on SLSP. For this you need a SWITCH edu-ID account. You can find information on registering here.

  Have your BiG user card to hand: you can still use the user ID. However, you don’t have to have a user card to register.
  

   

• Can I register my user card details in my SLSP user account later on?

  Yes, you can. On the SLSP registration page select ‘Library Card Management ’. Once you have signed in, you can enter your user ID in your account.

   

• I no longer have my user card. What should I do?

  Send an email to [e-mail] and we will send you a new card.

• Can I also order books from libraries affiliated to swisscovery?

  You can access all the swisscovery holdings and order items via www.alexandria.ch. Please note that there is a charge for borrowing items from other holdings. You will receive a bill from the library in question.

  If you are a federal employee and would like to order books from other swisscovery libraries for work purposes, please contact [e-mail]. You will find more information at Inter-library lending. 

• Is the BiG affiliated to the swisscovery courier service?

  No, it is not.

   

• Can I pay any charges levied at the BiG premises?

  No, this is not possible.
