In recent years, much has been written about sortition (election by drawing lots) as a political process, and of the many virtues it may have. Historical examples have often been cited without paying close attention to the detail of the procedure and its effects. The articles in this volume seek to fill this gap by focusing on some less well-known historical cases, e.g. the city of Bern, the Canton of Glarus, certain cities of the Holy Roman Empire, and institutions of the Helvetic Republic. A different history of sortition emerges, in which the democratic dimension, if not absent, is at least secondary.
