The descriptions of the military medical facilities under the Helvetic Republic presented here are of huge significance, as this is the first time such a work has been published. The author shows how an attempt was made in the Helvetic Republic to introduce modern, well-organised structures, but because Switzerland was a theatre of war, improvisation was unavoidable. Nonetheless, the medical services were efficient.
The work is also the first to deal with the predecessors to the troops of the Helvetic Republic: the Milices Vaudoises, the Zürcher Truppe, the Säntiser Miliz and the guard of the Helvetic Republic government and parliament.
