Georg Heberlein autograph collection

The Georg Heberlein autograph collection at the Library Am Guisanplatz BiG comprises around 1,400 autographs of famous personalities such as Charles the Bold, Ronald Reagan and Neil Armstrong.

Not all writing is legible, and this also applies to the 1,400 or so documents in the Georg Heberlein autograph collection dating from 1471 to 1983. The collection contains documents by famous names such as Charles the Bold, Ronald Reagan and Neil Armstrong.

Georg Heberlein (1902–1984), a major industrialist from Toggenburg, was very interested in celebrities from the military and politics, and collected their autographs. Not least thanks to his extensive international connections, Heberlein managed to acquire a huge number of important documents. His collection includes simple autograph cards, receipts, congratulations and various official documents as well as historically significant notes – signed or written by a famous person.

Eleven years after his death in 1995, Heberlein's three daughters, Brigitte Cappis, Verena Hanck and Annette Brauen, paid tribute to their father's passion. They presented the collection to at the time president of the Swiss Confederation, Kaspar Villiger, to be bequeathed to the Library Am Guisanplatz BiG.

The BiG has digitised all the documents of the Georg Heberlein autograph collection. You can access the Georg Heberlein autograph collection directly via the Alexandria search portal and download the documents.
